Wanted to share two of our favorite resources for family worship through song!
- Then Sings My Soul by Robert Morgan
This book contains tons hymns and the stories behind them. My husband and I have a desire to teach our children how to worship through song and for that to be a normal part of our family rhythm. Our one hurdle – insane lack of musical ability. Insane lack.
That’s where this book comes in handy for us! Before bed almost every night we sing a different hymn together. We may not have much talent but we have sincere hearts and we can read and remember melodies (for the most part ha!) of the songs we grew up singing. So we CAN and we should teach our kids to worship through song – even better we can teach them that though sometimes we sing off key and pitch and well really all kinds of off its okay because it’s what’s happening in our hearts that matters.
My secret dream is that when Titus goes to college he might just ask his roommate if he wants to sing a hymn before bed 😉! Okay no, my dream is that Titus would know and love Jesus – but what I would give to see the look on that roommates’ face!
HIGHLY recommend this book and you can buy it here: https://www.amazon.com/Then-Sings-My-Soul-Special/dp/078523182X
- New City Catechism app
I know not everyone grew up in a church tradition that included Catechisms. Don’t let it intimidate you. The best way I can sum it up is that it is a systematic way to learn the foundational truths (theology) of the Christian faith. This is learned through asking a series of questions and memorizing responses. In some denominations this was traditionally part of becoming a member of the church.
The New City Catechism is helpful in that it has condensed what is usually well over 100 questions into 52, one for every week of the year! There is an adult mode with more detailed responses and prayers and a kids mode with more simple yet still profoundly deep responses AND they have now added a song for each question (sung by kids!) to help children remember! It really is an amazing resource!
Here is a sample question (the children’s answer is much shorter)
What is God?
Answer: God is the creator and sustainer of everyone and everything. He is eternal, infinite, and unchangeable in His power and perfection, goodness and glory, wisdom, justice, and truth. Nothing happens except through him and by His will.
Our goal this year is to do a new song with the boys every week during bath time!! Fun and attainable goal!
We hope you will check it out or even join us throughout the rest of the year!
